Lesson 6: The Creation of Man – Formed in His Image and Given Authority

Humanity Was Not an Afterthought

The creation of man was the climax of God’s creative work. It did not happen by accident or evolve over time. It was deliberate, intimate, and purposeful. Genesis 1:26–27 declares,

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…’ So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Everything before this point in creation was declared into being. But when God made man, He paused. He consulted within the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and formed man with divine intent. This wasn’t just another creature added to the earth. This was God’s image-bearer—a representative of heaven on earth.

Made in the Image and Likeness of God

To be made in the image of God means that humans reflect His nature in a way that no other creature does. It includes moral awareness, spiritual capacity, relational ability, and the authority to govern. Animals were created by God, but man was created to be like God—not in divinity, but in design, function, and dominion.

Genesis 2:7 offers a powerful distinction:

“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

This breath of life was God’s Spirit—divine impartation. It made man more than physical. It made him a spirit-being with a body. This truth is foundational for understanding spiritual authority, intimacy with God, and the capacity to operate in faith. God formed man from the dust, but it was His breath that gave man identity and power.

Male and Female: Created with Equal Value and Unique Design

Genesis 1:27 affirms that both male and female were created in the image of God. This means that men and women alike bear divine worth. Yet, in creation, we also see distinct roles that complement each other. Adam was formed first and given responsibility to cultivate and guard the garden (Genesis 2:15). Eve was created as a suitable helper (Genesis 2:18)—not as a lesser being, but as one who corresponded to Adam in value and purpose.

God’s design for gender is not cultural—it’s theological. Leaders of faith must uphold the biblical distinction and partnership between men and women as part of God’s original, good design.

Created for Dominion

God didn’t just create man for relationship—He created man for rulership. Genesis 1:28 says,

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion…’”

Dominion is delegated authority. It means man was created to govern creation under God’s authority. This includes managing the earth, stewarding its resources, naming the animals, and building families and cultures that reflect God’s order.

Dominion is not domination. It’s stewardship. It’s leadership rooted in submission to God. As leaders of faith, we must see ourselves not as owners of ministry or vision—but as entrusted stewards, ruling with wisdom, justice, and the Spirit’s leading.

Spirit, Soul, and Body

Understanding man’s makeup is key to effective ministry. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 reveals that we are triune beings:

“May your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • Spirit – our God-conscious part; where we are born again and commune with God
  • Soul – our mind, will, and emotions; where thoughts, choices, and feelings reside
  • Body – our physical vessel; the temporary house for our spirit and soul

When Adam sinned, his spirit died, and the soul took the lead. But in Christ, our spirit is reborn (John 3:6), and we are called to renew the mind (Romans 12:2) and discipline the body (1 Corinthians 9:27). Leaders of faith must teach people how to live from the spirit—led by truth, not emotion or flesh.

Human Life Is Sacred

Because man is made in the image of God, all human life is sacred—from the womb to old age. This truth shapes how we view identity, abortion, justice, and human dignity. It is why murder is condemned (Genesis 9:6) and why compassion is commanded (Proverbs 31:8–9).

We cannot understand the value of human life unless we understand the doctrine of creation. We are not evolved matter—we are image-bearers of a holy God. This has profound implications for leadership, discipleship, and how we raise up the next generation.

Identity and Purpose Flow from Creation

When people do not know where they came from, they will not know who they are. The confusion of identity, gender, and purpose that exists in the world today is the result of rejecting the Creator. As leaders of faith, we must restore the truth that identity comes from being made by God, in His image, for His purpose.

This truth breaks insecurity. It silences shame. It gives people confidence in who God made them to be and releases them into Kingdom purpose.

Final Charge

You were formed by the hand of God and filled with His breath. You were made for communion with Him and dominion in the earth. That truth doesn’t just define your origin—it defines your assignment.

Teach people to see themselves as God sees them—redeemed image-bearers, filled with the Spirit, called to lead with love, wisdom, and boldness. We are not just created beings—we are Kingdom representatives.
